The Difference Between Gel & AGM Batteries
It is impossible to say that one type of Gel or AGM battery is better than the other as the choice depends on many factors and characteristics. The key is to use the battery that best suits your application.
What Are Gel Batteries?
Gel batteries are valve-regulated, maintenance-free lead-acid batteries. They can be used in versatile ways. They are robust and don’t need much ventilation as they don’t produce any fumes.
What Are AGM Batteries?
AGM batteries are advanced lead-acid batteries providing support to the high electrical demands. They have a very low internal resistance, they are maintenance-free and lighter than the flooded lead-acid batteries. AGM batteries show better performance than traditional Lead Acid batteries. AGM batteries also have a lower internal resistance which means they allow faster charging.
The Advantages Of Gel & AGM Batteries In Application:
• Maintenance-free, no need to add water
• Extremely safe
• Long cycle life
• Long self-discharge
• High & stable performance
• High level of tolerance, good for extreme temperatures
The Differences Between Gel & AGM Batteries
The main difference between Gel & AGM batteries is in their structure. Gel batteries use a gel paste in which the electrolyte is suspended inside the battery case. In AGM batteries, the electrolyte is wicked up into a glass matt internally so it can never spill, which is very safe.
In addition, AGM batteries will likely perform better than Gel batteries in cold conditions as Gel batteries are more sensitive. For this reason, Gel batteries can’t work on too high voltage levels either. However, AGM batteries do not provide such large cycle life as GEL ones.
Zing Batteries Recommendation
Zing Batteries recommend considering both types of batteries. Choose GEL if you use your battery regularly or for long periods of time. If not, then opt for AGM as it enables you to use your battery on a higher rate application.
